Marcie was at the register, counting the opening till.

“Sorry I’m late. I actually got here early and went across the street to kill time. That bakery is a busy place.”

“Yep, and overpriced. That’s why I never go.” Marcie closed the cash drawer and walked around the counter, carrying a book ledger.

“I’m sorry that I took the extra weeks before starting…”

Marcie put her hand up. “No worries. The universe had other plans for you. I get it. Plus, as long as Olivia was okay with the arrangement, what do I have to say? Not my business. But this is yours.”

Lauren placed her food and coffee on the end of the counter.

Marcie plopped the oversize book in Lauren’s hands.

“This is your baby. Did Olivia tell you about the special events? How she will be renting out the room upstairs for sacred circles, séances, drumming, and Wicca classes, mainly herb, candle, and crystal education?”

“She ran through it quickly.”

“Good. I hope you listened as quickly because this is your baby. I don’t think Olivia anticipated such a demand. I guess there’re a lot of closeted witches in this town.” Marcie laughed.

“Did you say séances?” Lauren gripped the edges of the book tightly.

“Yep. And, boy, will you be busy this month. Especially as Halloween gets closer.”

She was fine with sacred circles, Wicca tool education, and appreciated the occasional drum circle, but séances scared her. As a child, she would hide in the stairs and watch her mother, grandmother, and their friends try to conjure up old friends long passed. She blamed them for antagonizing the spirit in her room who scared her.

She might have to talk to Olivia.

“Am I expected to mediate the séance?”

“Oh, no. It’s purely to rent out the space. Make sure it’s set up with what they need and they clean before they leave.”

“Okay.” She could do that. A healthy dose of white sage would clear the space quickly. Like nothing ever happened.

She hoped.

“The contact is listed next to the event. I’m sure you’ll be fine. Oh, in some cases, Olivia also rents out a spot in the store if the event has less than ten people and it’s after closing. Times like that are usually for meditations.”

Marcie ripped open a box of rose-and-sandalwood soap and placed it in the wicker basket resting on a ledge that ran the length of the wall.

A bell over the door rang, and a woman walked in.

“Showtime. Have fun. Any questions, just ask. I’m busy with inventory today. But I’ll help you with the register, so don’t panic.”

Lauren walked behind the counter and opened the book for a quick glance. The days were filling up. Most of the events she’d like to attend. Maybe she would learn more at the job than she anticipated.

She walked around the store, familiarizing herself with the merchandise and checking if the inventory was practical for her magickal needs.

Lavender, of course. Rosemary—protection—yes, she needed some for home. A quick glance showed that Serendipity was sufficiently stocked and becoming more of a metaphysical shop instead of a bath, soap, and shampoo store.
